In 1981, Tortex® Picks were initially created by Jim Dunlop to serve as a high-quality alternative to tortoiseshell. However, these picks quickly evolved into much more than that, establishing their own unique identity and setting a new standard for all other picks to be judged by. Jim Dunlop continued to build on the precision, consistency, and color-coded gauge system he had introduced with Nylon Picks, resolving to create a pick with a bright and snappy attack, superior memory and durability, and an improved grip.

After careful consideration, Jim chose Delrin as the base material for the picks and spent over a year developing a special treatment process to fully realize its potential. This treatment process is what sets Tortex Picks apart from the rest, providing them with a unique grip-enhancing matte surface and aggressive attack. Additionally, Jim expanded on his previous picks' color-coded gauge system to create the bright and timeless palette that has since become an industry standard. The fact that we adhere to Jim's original formula is the reason why Tortex Picks remain our best-selling pick line, which we still produce at the Dunlop HQ in Benicia, California.

With the introduction of Tortex, Jim Dunlop sparked a revolution, forever altering the world of picks. The instantly recognizable turtle logo and vibrant Tortex palette has become a gauge short-hand for guitar players. Just walk into any music store and ask for Green or Yellow Picks – chances are, you'll be shown a pack of Tortex .88mm or .73mm Picks. Musicians across the world, spanning every genre and playing style, have chosen Tortex Picks to aid them in doing what they love. Tortex Picks are proudly made in the USA, combining the bright tone and snappy, aggressive attack of Tortex with superior control, speed, and definition provided by the Jazz III XL shape.
